anxiety workshop

Do you get nervous, stuck in your head, shaky, tight, short of breath, panicky, sweaty, shut down, dry mouth, hot, throw-up or dizzy before or going into an audition?

Do you procrastinate, smoke, drink, take Beta-blockers or Xanax, try to reschedule, smoke weed, get “sick” or simply flake or cancel?

Take control. Learn a simple 5-step method to end this once and for all. Stop fearing it and feeling helpless or hopeless. You’re not cursed, inadequate or the only one. There are very simple techniques to free you of audition anxiety that will allow you to show what you know you can really do. I work with actors who have managed and suffered with anxiety for years whether booking or out for long stretches. They learn and practice a five-step method and are filled with relief and confidence when they realize how easy it can be.

Anxiety arises out of many different places but primarily it is a combination of unknown outcomes and uncontrollable circumstances. So part of the method shows you how to create knowns and self-control of circumstances. There are also breathing techniques, somatic exercises and visualizations that will give you a tool chest with which to overcome any anxiety.

Mind       - Expectations (setting real achievable ones)

                 - Choices (personalized ones that mean something to you)

                 - Purpose/Goal (attainable regardless of booking or not)

Body       - Recognition of pre-anxiety

                - Breath (freeing of to be in your voice)

                 - Muscles (grounding and relaxing)

Anxiety is an unpleasant state of inner turmoil, often accompanied by nervous behavior. It is the subjectively unpleasant feelings of dread over something unlikely to happen, such as feeling unrealistic fear, worry, and uneasiness, usually generalized and unfocused.  It is often accompanied by restlessness, fatigue, problems in concentration, and muscular tension. Anxiety is not considered to be a normal reaction to a perceived stress although many feel it occasionally. Anxiety is not the same as fear. Fear is evoked by a realistic danger and is an appropriate response to a perceived threat, while anxiety is worry or overreaction to a situation that is only subjectively seen as menacing.

Audition is a trial hearing given to an actor, singer, or other performer to test suitability for employment, professional training or competition. It may be a reading or other simplified rendering of a theatrical work, performed before a potential backer, producer, casting agent or director.
