Jungian Acting:

Building Character from Active Imagination

A WORKSHOP

with John Markland

June 14, 15, 16, 2024

“The characters born of our unconscious are truths we will soon learn.”.

We have wisdom and magic inside of us. We feel it and sometimes call it luck, a hunch, divine intervention ... Déjà vu, coincidence. Or maybe, you’ve caught yourself saying, “I don’t know what just happened.” “I blacked out.” No, you surrendered to your unconscious which chose, in this moment, to take over and deliver something from your depths. Something that had to come out.

A powerful Jungian technique which allows you to initiate, explore and eventually harness this ability is Active Imagination. An approach that allows you to give expression to the parts of you not normally seen or heard and in this direct connection, you gain a power most dismiss as unexplainable.

Over the past 20 years, I have refined Active Imagination specifically for acting and offer it as an insight to help actors build rich, deep, & memorable characters. Once they saw this way in, its undeniable, it’s exciting, it lets their work explode off the screen. This technique allows a direct channel to the primal part of yourself that is volcanic... it bubbles under the tectonic plates of your identity until it must break through. You may experience this in your regular life... now you can focus it and channel it to explode in your acting.

This is a three-day workshop intensive. You will be given a scene to perform but the character and its alter-egos will come from deep within your unconscious. The steps are simple, it may feel like a wisdom tooth being ripped out... but once you get it... you’ll laugh at certain things that you worry about now and you will certainly sense how small you’ve been playing it.

It you are auditioning, about to start a new project or are looking to do something new with a character you’ve been playing then this technique will change the game. This workshop will fill quickly so if you want this tool - register now
